National Institute of Social Development has been granted permission to award the Bachelors and Masters Degrees in Social Work by the Gazette Notification (Extraordinary) No. 1557/7 of 7th July 2088 under the section 25A of the Universities Act No. 16 of 1978.

It is a four year fulltime degree.

Yes. You can exit after completing the 1st year (Diploma in Social Work) or 2nd year (higher Diploma in Social Work).

Yes, You can follow the post graduate degrees in relevant fields in foreign universities with this qualification and apply for foreign jobs in relevant fields.

  • BSW Degree (4 year Fulltime) – Conducted free of charge (Only Rs. 15,000/- is charged at the registration.)
  • MSW Degree (2 year part-time weekend) – Rs. 227,000/-
  • Diploma Courses (depends on the type of course)

Only 10 undergraduates who has obtained the highest ‘Z score’ with annual parental income below Rs. 300,000/- will receive Mahapola Scholarship.

Other students who are below the above income level receive Institutional Bursaries.

Only 20 students are given hostel facilities. Selection criteria is family income level and the distance from home to the institute.

BSW and MSW Degrees are conducted in English medium.

You can’t follow two fulltime programmes but you can follow part-time programmes simultaneously. But you have to obtain permission from the Academic Affairs Board of the Institute.

Yes, students of any stream can apply if they have fulfilled minimum admission requirements.

Yes you should write to the Director General giving reasons and indicating the duration of postponement. Such requests shall be considered by the Governing Council on the recommendations of the Academic Affairs Board.
